Choosing Your Sauna FAQs

Choosing Your Sauna

What are the general factors when choosing your sauna?

Consider these general factors when choosing your sauna

  1. Construction -- See Converting a Room to Sauna vs. Setting up the DIY Prefab Modular Sauna Kit. Cedarbrook Sauna + Steam focuses on cedar saunas nearly exclusively.
  2. Usage and Location -- If you like using a sauna frequently, then you'll probably want one indoors next to your bathroom. If it's for your summer cabin, then a wood-fired outdoor sauna is ideal.
  3. Privacy -- Indoor saunas certainly offer more privacy.
  4. Available Space -- An indoor sauna requires space in your home. Most of our customers prefer to convert a large closet to sauna or add-on room.
  5. Heat Source: Electric, Gas, Wood-Fired or Infrared? Some caveats when choosing:
    • Infrared saunas can plug into an existing electrical circuit which makes it one of the easiest options
    • Electric saunas require their own electrical circuit which is a relatively easy option.
    • Wood-fired saunas require a supply of wood, and of course stoking the fire and monitoring
    • Gas saunas require some technical expertise when providing the supply lines as well as exhaust vents

Prefab modular sauna kit is composed of pre-built pre-insulated wall sections (or panels) ready to screw together, quickly making a sturdy freestanding sauna room ready to be assembled indoors or outdoors with a roof package added on a sturdy base.

You MUST choose and provide your own base and power supply lines, e.g. an underground electrical conduit or gas line. Suitable base options are pressure-treated lumber platform, concrete pad, brick patio, cinder block to lift the sauna off the dirt and water drainage.

IF you already have shed with a roof, then we recommend an indoor pre-cut sauna package to line the walls.

Are you converting a closet or room into the sauna room?

Converting a space into a sauna room

Indoor saunas are certainly cheaper because typically the room has already been built

Precut sauna kit is composed of pre-cut and custom-cut cedar boards. This kit basically lines the walls of an existing closet or room with cedar. Our precut sauna kits include custom-cut tongue and groove cedar paneling, sauna heater, sauna door, sauna benches and sauna accessories to fit your room exactly.

Once electrical wiring is finished, the stud bays should be insulated and then covered with a Sauna Foil Vapor Barrier. The sauna foil barrier is provided in all of our pre-cut sauna indoor kits.

Do you prefer to put together a sauna kit in an open room or garage?

Constructing a Sauna Kit in an Indoor Room

Our pre-fab saunas are kits you put together in an existing space, e.g. a deck, your basement or garage.

These sauna kits can be placed directly on a cement floor or we also can provide Modular Sauna Tray or Base. See this photo gallery of 4'x4' sauna kit being put up: Prefab Sauna Kit Assembly (4x4) Photo Gallery.

What size of sauna is recommended?

Factors When Choosing Your Sauna Size

First off it's emphasizing that our sauna interiors are the FULL width and length

So when we quote a 5'x7' sauna, we mean the actual usaable space, i.e. interior is 5 ft x 7 ft. The exterior is then 5'4"x7'4".

If you'd like a specific quote, please see out Get a Sauna Quote page

When choosing your sauna size, also consider these questions:

Do you want to lay down on the benches? — Plan for at least a 6' span for your sauna bench.

How many sauna bathers? — If you plan on sharing your sauna with 2 or 3 others on a regular basis, we recommend at a minimum a 4'x6' sauna, but 5'x7' or larger is certainly more comfortable.

How many sauna benches? — If you're interested in a larger sauna, then of course you may design many different bench arrangements. You might also consider widening the lower benches so they span all the way to the wall. This is great if you want to also place a vertical infrared sauna light (on side) on the bench, as below.

If you move, will you take your sauna with you?

Relocating Your Sauna Kit

Our pre-fab saunas kits can be taken apart and relocated

The indoor PRE-FAB sauna kits are more easily relocated, but any outdoor PRE-FAB sauna kits can be disassembled and moved as well, though a bit more involved with a roof, power supply and a base to consider.

Let us know if we can help you relocate your sauna. We're happy to answer your questions.
